Military Discount Program

The Problem

As a big-box retailer with a large e-commerce presence serving customers who are often active or retired military, we recognized the need to offer a discount program as a way to show our support and appreciation. Many of our competitors already provided similar benefits, making it imperative for us to implement a solution that not only met industry standards but also delivered a seamless and user-friendly experience for our customers.

The Solution

We partnered with an external software provider that specializes in military verification to ensure a secure and seamless experience for our customers. This integration allowed us to launch an everyday discount program exclusively for active and retired military members. By implementing this solution, we not only met customer expectations but also strengthened brand loyalty and made a significant segment of our audience feel valued and appreciated.

Our Military Customer

I created a user persona to keep the team aligned on the purpose behind this feature and to ensure we stayed focused on the needs of our core customer. This persona served as a reference point throughout the design process, guiding decisions and helping us create a solution that truly resonates with our audience.

Final Design: A Clear, Guided Experience

With all user flows and journeys accounted for, I was able to focus on finalizing the design for the military landing page. We implemented a dynamic header block that clearly outlines the steps to receive the discount online.

This approach made the most sense, as users may enter the experience from different points depending on whether they’re already loyalty members or not. The step-by-step layout provided clarity and consistency, and it tested well during in-house usability sessions with military veterans.

We went through several iterations of this flow, refining it to ensure it was intuitive, efficient, and aligned with customer expectations. Because the process varied depending on whether a user was part of our loyalty program, multiple flows were required. This also meant the page design needed to be dynamic and adapt to different user scenarios seamlessly.
